I’m puzzled that it needs much maintaining if included? I guess everything has a maintenance cost at some level as it has dependencies that may change and hence needs to be included in a testing suite to detect any breaks there perhaps.īut as I said, your mention of an SDK and packages at just throws me into a quick pot of confusion as I go there in my web browser and am confronted with nothing that resembles either, hence desirous of more detailed pointers. Stand each one filling-side down, with the connected edges pointing up. The dumplings will soak up a lot of broth as they cook and the flour will thicken the liquid slightly. But the issue is one of familiarity and time. And rendering HTMl in text is a solved problem (aka elinks, links, lynx, w3m) not a wheel any of us has to reinvent. And part of the suite current sees me wanting to render a small web table in text (most of the real work I want to do in JSON anyhow, but this is a nicety). And I would like it in the repos as I’m building a suite of tools for my own use that I’d happily share to anyone and would like the dependencies to be manageable. When the water boils, place the steamer over or in the pot. (Make sure the bottom of your steamer doesn’t touch the water.) Place dumplings without touching each other in a bamboo steamer (or regular steamer), lined with a cheese cloth or a steam liner. Demand is clearly low or it would be there, but here’s some modest demand -).Īnd my feeling is, Turris can build this and add it to the repos in like 30 mins net effort and it’ll take me a lot lot longer. Bring a small amount of water in a large pot to boil. I wonder if Turris wouldn’t mind building it and adding it to the Omnia repo? It’s certainly available, and a cool util to have as an option on such a router. Meanwhile, make the dumplings using the other half of the ingredients and finish the recipe as in step 6.Alas that is not a built package, and needs building which is a can of worms for me as I haven’t got a build environment for doing that set up and so it’ll take some more (aargh) learning. There's a mountain of weaponry to choose from - napalm, lasers, nuclear missiles and more. Each hit and kill earns you cash that you can use to buy new hardware. You can't move, though (at least, not at first), so must keep adjusting your weaponry based on previous shots until you can hit your target: mastering this takes quite some time.Īs your shooting skills develop, however, other elements of the gameplay emerge. You're placed on an attractive 3D landscape with a number of other players (computer or human), then take turns firing weapons at your opponents until only the winner remains. The number of weapons to choose from makes the game extremely engaging, and can make this title worth the download.Scorched 3D is a free and open source artillery game inspired by the old DOS favourite, Scorched Earth. The graphics and game design are 2D, and once you play a few times, it will lose whatever luster there is. The objective of accumulating maximum points is simple to achieve. Pocket Tanks is a really fun game to play alone or with a friend. What’s the final verdict on Pocket Tanks? Other artillery games are PubG, World of Tanks, Battle Tanks, Atomic Tanks, Scorched Earth, Duel of Tanks, and Gravitee Wars. However, up to 8 players can play Shell Shock and more layers and levels are available. In Shell Shock too, you can customize tanks to destroy the environment and add new features and weapons by buying expansion packs. The main competitor to Pocket Tanks is Shell Shocks, which is extremely similar to Pocket Tanks in its plays and environment. What are the alternatives to Pocket Tanks? To add variety, you need to buy expansion packs for more access to more weapons. Once you’ve got the hang of shooting and aiming, that’s all there is to it, really.Īlso, the lack of layers or story also leads to the same monotonous gameplay again and again. There is no storyline tying everything together and strategy is not key to win. The game is often too simplistic, and after a while of playing the game, you lose interest soon enough. While the game is quick and upbeat, it hardly falls into the category of the sophisticated, almost life-like combat games available. You can also play the game online for free across platforms, irrespective of the devices. It is now available across Android and iOS devices as well. The game was originally available on Windows and Macs. You can purchase these online and download these from the official site. A total of 320 weapons are available over 30 expansion packs for the game. What do you get with Expansion Packs?Īpart from the extra weapons, expansion packs can also get you 5 free weapons, 15 for mobile versions. The sound effects and animations are top quality. You can actually see how the artillery explodes. The graphics are in 2D, yet remain sharp. The real attraction is how the different weapons work. The interest level keeps rising as you keep hitting the target and getting more points. After a few times of practice, this is not difficult to achieve. The objective is simple: to accumulate as many points as possible by shooting down the opponent. The game is simple and does not have long gameplay, so you won't devote hours to get to the “end”. The artillery game is extremely easy to play and with some practice, you can easily hone skills. For instance, a missile launcher will have a different effect as that of a simple grenade launcher. Separately, each pack has its own specific functionality. The game boasts expansion packs: in one case, you can use up to 320 weapons. The entire environment is suitable as a destructive space, with its tunnels, burrows, pedestals, bunkers, and more. The thrill of shooting down the opponent and accumulating points clearly gives an adrenalin rush. The game is highly engaging, keeping players on their toes at all times. The end objective is to accumulate maximum points, which you earn when a tank shoots the opponent the maximum times permitted. There is some strategy in what kind of armor you should choose at what range and angle. Players can also use tools to dig burrows and hide from opponents. One section on the app's homepage is called Outdoor Sports Index. This app gives you access to standard weather information like daily temperatures, weather conditions and future forecasts. But AccuWeather also hides arguably essential information behind the paid version, such as insight into what you should do if you find yourself facing dangerous weather. You can download The Weather Channel app for free in Apple's App Store and the Google Play store. But beware, the privacy policy does say The Weather Channel "cannot delete data directly associated with your account without deleting your account." You can also request to delete data related to your preferences. You won't run into these ads if you subscribe to the paid version of the app.Īccording to The Weather Channel's privacy policy, the app may collect, use and share your data. I ran into four ads when scrolling down the main page of the app, and then I ran into a whole sponsored content section near the bottom of the page. The downside? The free version of the app has a lot of ads, and they can be distracting. The app gives you standard weather information, like hourly temperatures, rain chances throughout the day, a live weather radar and any severe weather alerts in your area. Most of the stories are related to the weather, the environment and wildlife, but you'll also see health- and lifestyle-related stories. You can watch videos of news stories from The Weather Channel in the app. Calling The Weather Channel app a weather app feels like a disservice. Note that this issue is specific to the Deck the desktop Steam client doesn’t take anywhere near as long when it comes to any of these processes, for some strange reason. I guess you’ll have to pick your poison either way. Even so, after re-installing the game, the verification process took an hour-and-a-half. Add to that another two hours for the verification process. But the Deck will go through the patching and verifying process for applying this update anyway, which SDG noted as “absolutely ridiculous.” They were better off just uninstalling the game and reinstalling it, since the patching process was taking over two hours. Now keep in mind this update obviously won’t benefit Steam Deck users, as the Deck can’t make use of these features. Cyberpunk 2077 got a DLSS 3/Reflex patch just a few days ago. Now let’s talk about games that are already installed, but have an update available. Whereas “downloading it from scratch” took just over an hour. Altogether, Steam Deck Gaming reports it took over two hours to install a pre-loaded game. Verifying took close to an additional 40 minutes. On Deck, there was still about an hour left of unpacking to do.Īs if that wasn’t bad enough, the Deck had to go through the verification phase after the game was unpacked. On desktop, it took 25 minutes to unpack the game, unlike the six-minute claim that Steam reported. Try to process how long that would take for unpacking 122 GB’ worth of content. Steam Deck Gaming just uploaded a video, noting that “this problem is really starting to get to me.” Unpacking Forspoken is only operating at 6 KB/s. If you’ve ever noticed the Deck downloading huge updates for your games out of nowhere, know that you’re not the only one having to deal with downtime. We keep textures low quality (2K, 1K, and even sometimes 512) to keep the mod size down. And the recently re-added M2HB accounted for that much by itself before being resized to 2K res from the original 4K. Factor in all of the accessories (the MP5 SD barrel and mounting rails) and we’re looking at roughly 62 megabytes of space for two guns worth of texture sets. Now double that for the MP5A5, that’s 40 megabytes of space. Just for that one gun, textures alone account for nearly 20 megabytes of space. Just as an example, our new MP5A2 has 4K textures – specifically 4096×2048 resolution. Not everything can be super-fancy 4K res, hyper-realistic detail, especially not if you want to keep file size anywhere close to reasonable. Again, something that will likely always need improvement simply due to how much stuff is in the mod. Not to mention, at the time of implementation of certain weapons (i.e shotguns), proper anims literally didn’t exist. But we still have perms from some of the bigger names in the field to use their work. Thankfully, a few users of the mod have stepped up and are helping us out anim-wise. We have reached out to all of them for help with rigging anims, but so far, all of them (Aside from Fiddler Green) have declined to help us directly as they’re busy with other projects. Additionally, there are very few animators in the community right now. We know some things are weird, “broken”, or flat-out wrong, but it’s what we have to work with for now. So unless you know of an existing animation set from another Fallout 4 mod that we might be able to use for a given weapon, please don’t bother complaining. These will probably always need improvement in some aspect, simply due to the sheer variety of content in the mod. And that will only continue to grow larger. Such is the cost of having entirely custom anims or anims decent enough to fit the guns until dedicated anims come along. That is ONE FIFTH (1/5) OF THE FILE SIZE alone. The ‘AnimTextData’ alone weighs in around 240 MBs. Additionally, a decent chunk of space is eaten up by animations too. If you think 1-2 GBs is big and you still want us to add high-res textures? Then you have no true grasp on the concept of “big”. The mod size is actually incredibly small for all of the content we have. No matter how amazing of a modder you are, you will miss things. However, you must realize that with a mod this large, there is bound to be a ton of bugs that are easily missed in a mass amount of code and files. Conceivably and with some difficulty, the book could even be used in a class with a different editor. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, necessarily. While the title of the book is “Java with BlueJ”, the features of BlueJ aren’t exhaustively explored. The book doesn’t use examples that are specific to particular races, ethnicities, or backgrounds, with the exception of very few that include references to gender, but those that do are inclusive (the data type used is literally non binary). There could be improvements with some of the figures, but overall the book is easy to navigate.Ī couple minor errors, though most are typos (as already mentioned). Figures are helpful and well positioned on the pages. The code is well formatted with line numbers and helpful syntax coloring. The format of the book is very straight-forward. This is also important in an introductory text where students are feeling out the practice of programming at the same time that they’re reading about it. For instance, care was taken to discuss variable naming at the point that variables are introduced and the purpose for indenting if/else structures is specifically addressed.Įxercises are spread throughout the book at thoughtful intervals. I liked that style conventions were addressed as concepts come up, and not all at once later in the book. After reading through a complete chapter, there are few questions left unanswered. Other times some concepts are introduced a bit too early (for example, literals of many types are introduced before the data types are), though some degree of this is hard to avoid, especially in the beginning, when many concepts are intertwined. As an introductory programming book, it might be more helpful to first introduce the reader to programming, generally, even though the book focuses on Java, specifically. The introduction jumps right in to Java history and architecture. Non-essential chapters of the book are identified early. The book does well dividing topics in to small, logical, self-contained sections with relevant examples. After the first few examples, the reader will recognize the format and what they should expect from BlueJ if they work through an example themselves. The language and delivery of concepts is consistent throughout the book. With the exception of a few concepts or terms in the beginning chapters, terms are carefully introduced. Examples are worked through slowly for an introductory programmer. Sentences are not complicated and the language is concise. The language of the book is easy to follow. Other changes will likely also be easy to integrate with the existing text. The section on variables could be fairly simply updated to incorporate the “var” keyword if the author chooses to do so in the future. Since the book doesn’t take great advantage of BlueJ’s codpad, the jshell update is mostly irrelevant. That won’t break anything that’s in the book and no static book can account for these changes anyway. The book also uses BlueJ in a way that is likely to stay fairly consistent, but with recent updates to the JDK (such as jshell in JDK 9 and “var” in Java 10), tools like BlueJ may be updated to incorporate these beginner-friendly features. Since this focuses on basic Java concepts that aren’t likely to change, this aspect of the book will be long lived. The primary content is related to the reader accurately. There are some minor typos with snippets of program syntax, but these can lead to confusion. comments aren’t given a complete explanation before being used in example programs) The coverage of these topics is complete enough to answer most questions an intro student may come up with when introduced to the basics, but there are some notable exceptions (ex. For the topics that are covered, the book is quite exhaustive, covering small details of syntax that students may or may not encounter in their first year or two. There are, of course, many Java topics not covered by this book, but the book does a good job of covering important concepts for an introductory programming course.
